Picture the scene. The year, 1802. A dimly lit room. The smoky aroma of paraffin lamps hangs in the air. George III was still on the throne. Using a battery of his own invention, Humphry Davy created the first electric light. He connected a piece of carbon to his battery and the carbon glowed, lighting the room. His invention became known as the Electric Arc lamp. While it produced light, it was short lived and too bright for practical use. It sparked other inventors to create their own versions, Edison being the most well-known was credited for being the first to mass produce the incandescent light bulb. The problem with this type of bulb is that it loses about 98% of its energy producing heat, making it quite inefficient. Many famous physicists over the years tried to solve this problem and increase efficiency, the breakthrough being made in 1962 by Nick Holonyack, a consulting engineer for General Electric Company. He invented the first visible light LED.
